“I had a Kati Basti treatment  and would strongly recommend this treatment for anyone. I suffer from chronic back pain and have done so for a while. The treatment was amazing, calming and very relaxing. The warm oils on my back were very soothing then I received a wonderful massage at the end of the treatment. Thank you Mudita! I will definitely be back.”

Kati Basti

Offering relief from serious problems of the joints, shoulder and spine

60min - $90 for single treatment

60min - $80 per treatment for a series of 5 ($400)

How do you pronounce it?

You pronounce ‘Kati Basti’ a little like it looks - Cutty Bus-tea.

What is it good for?

Kati Basti is Ayurveda’s unique treatment for musculoskeletal disorders of the spine, shoulder and joints. It provides significant relief in conditions such as sciatica, slipped and degenerative discs, back pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, knee problems and arthritis.

Can it be used as a preventive measure?

Yes! Kati Basti can also be used to prevent spine, shoulder and knee problems. If you are prone to stiffness and pain in an area, you can use Kati Basti to help increase flexibility and reduce any pain. For example, if you’re a yogi or a surfer and want more flexibility in your thoracic spine, Kati Basti can help.

What does it involve?

A moulded dough (made from urad daal and atta flour) is placed over the problem area to hold carefully selected medicated herbal oils – held at a specific temp (usually quite a high temp) for a specific time. The warmth and pressure of the oil, combined with the dermal absorption of the medicated oils helps to treat the specific problem as well as the surrounding tissues. It has a therapeutic effect in cases of degeneration, inflammation, spasming and seized muscles. Often when nothing else works, Kati Basti can help! The treatment is always finished with a massage and steam to deepen the absorption of the oil and the release of the surrounding tissues.

How many do I need to have to experience relief from a chronic condition?

To get real benefit from the treatment in a chronic or long-standing condition such as frozen shoulder or degenerative discs, you will need between 7-10 treatments with 1-2 treatments per week. You may feel benefits after just one treatment but long-term resolution of pain and return of mobility and flexibility will take a little more time.

Is it purely therapeutic or will it feel good too?

It will absolutely fell good too! It is a surprisingly relaxing treatment given oil is just being applied to a small area.  And, at the end of each treatment you will receive massage to the area and a steam.

What oils do you use?

For all of our treatments, we use Bio Veda Ayurvedic Massage Oils made in Kerala, South India, by a company that adheres strictly to traditional manufacturing processes while using modern technology in areas of hygiene and quality control.

The oils are made exactly in accordance with the classical Ayurvedic texts from formulations that have been used for thousands of years. These oils (with either a base of black sesame or coconut oil) have been meticulously prepared over a period of days, or even weeks, in a unique process that retains the medicinal and energetic qualities of the plants. When applied, Ayurvedic medicated oils easily penetrate the skin and deliver the healing properties of the herbal formulations directly to the body through dermal absorption.

Why do the costs differ between a one-off treatment and a series?

Mainly because these treatments are most beneficial as a series so we want to give our clients a discount for committing to >5 treatments.

When should I avoid having a kati basti?

You should avoid having a kati basti below if you are suffering from a cold, fever, diarrhoea, menstruation, or any acute illness.
